Misinformation in Digital Africa: Lessons from Kenya and Nigeria

On October 25th, 2024 at 16:00 BST, the AI in Africa team at The Black Policy Institute is excited to host a webinar roundtable discussion on "Misinformation in Digital Africa: Lessons from Kenya and Nigeria."

We’re bringing together experts who are leading the charge against misinformation and disinformation in digital spaces across Africa. They will discuss how false narratives spread online, their societal impact, and actionable solutions—particularly focusing on Kenya and Nigeria, two nations at the heart of these digital challenges.

Meet our Panelists:

Toni Adewuyi, MPH – Senior Data and Communications Coordinator, bringing over 5 years of experience in global health advocacy. Toni specializes in leveraging digital marketing and behavioral science to promote health equity and mobilize communities. She’s passionate about using data-driven strategies to influence public health behaviors in the digital age.

Silas Jonathan Silas – Leading expert in media research, open-source intelligence (OSINT), and the fight against disinformation in Africa. As the head of DAIDAC at CJID, Silas has played a pivotal role in exposing information manipulation during elections and countering foreign influence in digital spaces. His work critically addresses AI and disinformation in Africa.

Demas Kiprono – Distinguished public interest lawyer and human rights advocate, with over 13 years shaping freedom of expression and digital rights policies in Kenya and Eastern Africa. Demas has successfully challenged restrictive laws, including the decriminalization of defamation, and continues to lead initiatives on AI regulation and media law.

Mikhail Nyamweya – Researcher and consultant with deep expertise in judicial politics and the role of misinformation in African democracies. Mikhail’s recent research on misinformation during Kenya’s elections sheds light on the digital threats to democratic processes. He’s contributed to USAID-funded projects that investigate fake news and political narratives.

Don't miss this opportunity to engage with industry leaders who are actively shaping AI policies, digital rights, and community-driven solutions to misinformation in Africa.
